The Jacksonville Jaguars are taking a measured approach with rookie phenom Travis Hunter during offseason team activities. Drafted second overall in 2025, Hunter’s rare ability to contribute as both a wide receiver and cornerback has generated league-wide buzz. But for now, Jacksonville is being cautious. Hunter won’t be playing on both sides of the ball in the same OTA session.

Head coach Liam Coen explained the decision, saying, “We won’t put him in that situation to have him do that, although I’m sure he’d probably want to.” Hunter is still attending meetings with both the offense and defense to stay mentally engaged, but the team is avoiding overloading him physically this early in his career.

This strategy appears focused on long-term development. Hunter, who starred at both Jackson State and Colorado, famously refused to give up either role in college...so much so that reports indicated he’d rather retire than choose just one position. The Jaguars are respecting that desire, while also protecting their top investment from burnout.

“In-season, he’s going to probably have to [practice both ways], just because of the way practices are kind of organized,” Coen noted. That could mean defensive focus on third-down days while still seeing snaps on offense during red zone work or gadget plays.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence already seems to be vibing with Hunter, complimenting the rookie’s “juice” and swagger during early practices. This chemistry could pave the way for limited but exciting offensive usage alongside full-time cornerback responsibilities.

While fantasy managers in IDP leagues dream of the rare two-way breakout star, the Jaguars are wisely playing the long game. Hunter’s development will be gradual...but all signs point to a foundational piece for Jacksonville, both on the field and in the fantasy realm.
